How to get to the Sacred Valley from Cusco

Four options: an organised day tour with pickup, guide and lunch from US$29; public minibuses to Pisac or Urubamba; a taxi or private transfer; or the train to Ollantaytambo. By road, Pisac and Chinchero are about an hour from Cusco.

The four ways

Organised day tour from US$29

To see 4 or 5 sites in one day, with a guide

Hotel pickup, certified guide, lunch and every transfer in a single booking. For two people with a guide, it is usually cheaper than taxi and guide separately.

Fixed timetable: you leave at 06:20 or 07:20.

Shared minibus or bus low

For a single town, with time to spare

They leave Cusco for Pisac or Urubamba; from there, another leg to each site.

No guide; you buy each ticket and connect each leg yourself.

Taxi or private transfer per vehicle

To go on your own schedule, door to door

Negotiated per vehicle and day; you reach wherever you want.

No guide at the sites unless you hire one separately.

Train to Ollantaytambo train fare

To reach the lower valley on the way to Machu Picchu

Direct from Cusco or Poroy to Ollantaytambo station.

One town only: Chinchero, Maras and Moray need a road.

Distances that shape the day

Cusco to the Taray viewpoint takes 40 minutes; to Chinchero, an hour. From Chinchero to the Maras salt mines is 30 minutes and to Moray another 15. The run down to Urubamba takes 40 minutes, Urubamba to Ollantaytambo 1 h 10, and Ollantaytambo to Pisac 1 h 50. Pisac back to Cusco is 40 minutes; Chinchero back to Cusco, 45.

About an hour by road to Pisac or to Chinchero; longer to Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. Times vary with the route and traffic.

Can I visit the valley on my own?

Yes, with public minibuses or a taxi. You will need to buy the Tourist Ticket and the Maras entrance yourself and arrange a guide at each site if you want one.

Which option is cheapest for two people?
