Chinchero: what you see on the Sacred Valley tour

Chinchero is the highest stop of the day at 3,762 m and the one where the valley's textile tradition is still alive. The VIP visits it first, at 07:40 for 1 h 15; the Classic visits it last, at 16:45 for an hour.

Weavers of Chinchero at backstrap looms in front of the Inca terraces

What you see

A weaving family demonstrates the whole chain: alpaca fleece washed with a local root, spun on a drop spindle, dyed with plants and cochineal, and woven on a backstrap loom. Then the Inca terraces, and the colonial church built directly on Inca walls.

Practical

Flat walking, no stairs of note; the demonstration is seated. Cold at 07:40; a warm layer matters more here than anywhere else on the route. The Tourist Ticket covers the entrance.

Which tour, which time

VIP: first stop, 07:40–08:55. Classic ending in Cusco: last stop, 16:45–17:45. The Classic ending in Ollantaytambo does not visit Chinchero. Compare the routes.

Related questions

Short answers to what we get asked most. If your question is different, write to us.

Is Chinchero worth it for the textiles alone?

For many travellers it is the stop they remember: the dyeing demonstration is hands-on and the weavers sell their own work at fair prices, with no middleman.

Why is it so cold?

Altitude. At 3,762 m and before 09:00 the air is thin and cold even in the dry season; by the time the Classic arrives in the afternoon it is milder.

Is there a market?

The weaving centre sells textiles directly. The town also holds a Sunday market in the main square.
